Our IRAP readiness service prepares cloud, SaaS and technology providers for an IRAP assessment against the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM), so the assessor spends their time confirming controls rather than discovering gaps. IRAP assessments may only be performed by assessors endorsed by the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD). Security Solution Consultants (SSC) does not perform IRAP assessments. We prepare you for one: scoping, ISM control mapping, gap remediation, evidence packs and liaison with the endorsed assessor you engage.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who runs it? | ASD, through the Infosec Registered Assessors Program (IRAP), endorses individuals from the private and public sectors to provide security assessments. |
| Who can assess? | Only ASD-endorsed IRAP assessors. They are independent professionals, not ASD employees or contractors. |
| What can be assessed? | ICT systems, cloud services, gateways and GovLink, at SECRET and below. |
| What do you receive? | A security assessment report setting out what was tested and the risks found. IRAP assessors do not accredit, certify, endorse or register systems on behalf of ASD. |
| Who decides? | Your government customer, which decides whether to use the system based on the report and its own risk assessment. |
| What is the benchmark? | The ISM, which ASD updates every quarter, in March, June, September and December. The current release is September 2026. |
| Is there a certified list? | No. ASD’s Cloud Services Certification Program ended on 2 March 2020. Buyers now read IRAP reports and make their own decision. |
Australian Government information is classified as OFFICIAL, OFFICIAL: Sensitive, PROTECTED, SECRET or TOP SECRET. Most SaaS and cloud providers selling to Commonwealth agencies aim for PROTECTED: agencies handling PROTECTED information typically ask for an IRAP assessment at that level, and the Hosting Certification Framework requires PROTECTED systems to be hosted with certified providers. ISM controls are marked with the classifications they apply to, so the target level decides which controls are in scope. We help you choose the level your customers need and your service can sustain, rather than the highest one available.
Three pieces of Commonwealth policy meet in most IRAP engagements, and they answer different questions.
For most SaaS providers the practical question is where the service is hosted. If you build on a hyperscale cloud or a colocation provider, check its HCF certification level and the regions it covers, and confirm with your government customer whether your own service needs anything more while the reform is under way.

Plainly: we prepare, we do not assess. IRAP assessments may only be performed by ASD-endorsed IRAP assessors, and SSC provides readiness services only. Our readiness review is not an IRAP assessment and does not produce an IRAP report. Keeping the people who prepare a system separate from the people who assess it also protects the independence of the report your customers will read.
Assessors charge for time, and most of the time lost in an IRAP assessment is lost to the same few problems. Readiness work is aimed squarely at them:
SaaS providers are assessed against the same ISM, with a few problems of their own:

No. IRAP assessments may only be performed by ASD-endorsed IRAP assessors, and SSC provides readiness services only. We prepare your system and evidence and work alongside the endorsed assessor you engage.
Scoping the system and target classification, mapping the applicable ISM controls, closing gaps, writing the security documentation and organising evidence by control, so the assessment confirms controls rather than discovering missing ones.
No. IRAP assessors do not accredit, certify, endorse or register systems on behalf of ASD. The assessment produces a report, and each government customer decides whether to use the system based on it and its own risk assessment.
Every quarter, in March, June, September and December. The current release is September 2026, and we check each new release against your control mapping.
The highest classification your government customers will actually put in the service, which for most Commonwealth work is PROTECTED. Aiming higher than customers need adds cost without adding sales.
They answer different questions. IRAP assesses a system's security controls against the ISM, while the HCF certifies data centre and cloud providers on ownership, control, supply chain and security, and an IRAP report can be used as evidence in an HCF assessment. The HCF is being reformed, and new registrations have been paused since 3 November 2025.
Not always. It depends on the agency, the classification of the information and the procurement. For services that will hold PROTECTED information, buyers commonly ask for a recent IRAP assessment.
Many can. We map your existing controls and evidence to the ISM so they are collected once, then focus effort on ISM-specific requirements such as the Essential Eight and the controls for your target classification.
